Divicibare plateau is located in southwest Serbia, on Maljen Mountain at an altitude of 980 meters
and a thirty-eight kilometers distance from the town of Valjevo. As a central part of Maljen
Mountain, Divcibare plateau is extremely rich in forests and waters, as well as in numerous animal
species.
It is surrounded by Suvobor and Povlen mountains intersected by many springs and rivers, cliffs and
canyons. Divcibare plateau is also a meeting place of two different climates- Carpathian mountain
climate and maritime climate, so it is often called ‘The Factory of red blood cells’.
The highest peak of Maljen Mountain is Kraljev Sto 1103m (King’s Table). The legend has it that it
was named after the Serbian king Dusan the Great.
Crni Vrh 1098m (Black Peak) is the second highest peak of Maljen mostly covered in dark green
conifer forests which sometimes seem almost black.
The research of the climate of Divcibare plateau began in 1929. On the basis of observations
conducted over a longer period of time it was established that it has a favorable average year
temperature, with autumn average above the spring average temperature which confirms its
favorable climatic conditions.
There are 289 days/year without wind, and the average wind speed is 4.4m/sec. The annual average
of 55% of cloudiness also indicates a lot of sunshine. Due to its favorable climate and following the
conclusion of The Serbian Climate Institute-Balneo from 1953, Divicibare locality can be used in
therapeutic purposes.
According to the conclusion of this Institute Divcibare can be used for treatments of the following
conditions:
• Lung disorders
• Conditions with neurovegetative disorders (neurocirculatory asthenia, hyperthyroidism)
• General disorders: asthenia, low body weight, Hypo chromic anemia
• Dermatoses treated with heliotherapy
The abundance of rivers and springs and plant species as well, provides an excellent habitat for
numerous animal species. Game of Maljen region includes roe deer, rabbit, fox and wolf, though in
smaller number. Once a common species in these forests and now rather rare-wild boar is making its
comeback.
Also, the white breasted marten and the pine marten known for their expensive fur live in the
Maljen Mountain area.
There is a considerate number of plant species on Maljen Mountain. Divcibare plateau is well known
for its soft grassy meadows and the above mentioned coniferous forests.
Coniferous species – Scots pine, Pinus Nigra, fir, juniper, mountain pine (pinus mugo)-can all be
found in Divcibare and Maljen area. There is also a curious bunch of mountain pine trees in the very
center of Divcibare settlement, although this species grow at altitudes of more than 2,000m and this
is not a creation of a man. The most common deciduous tree species are oak tree, ash, manna ash,
common hazel, sycamore maple, common hornbeam and Turkish hazel which is a rare species since
it represents the remainder of the Tertiary period.
